Jacko’lantern also known as jacko’lantern started in Ireland. There was a saying that a man named Jack in Ireland in the 18th century (in the 17th century people usually refer to a man who does not know his name as Jack” in the UK) who was very stingy. One day he invited the devil to drink. After drinking He had no money to pay the bill. He persuaded the devil to turn into six pence to pay for the wine. After getting the six pence Jack didn’t use it to pay for the wine. Instead he use a piece of silver paper to suppress the devil. Later the devil promised Jack not to scare him for a whole year and then Jack let the devil out. The Halloween demon appeared again the following year and it promised not to harass Jack for a year. But before the end of the year Jack died. After death heaven did not accept him because he was very stingy; hell did not keep him because he teased the devil. With nowhere to go he finally had to keep walking carrying a white radish with charcoal fires given to him by the devil to illuminate the road and find a place to rest. Later the Irish used potatoes or rutabaga to make lanterns. In the 1840s when new immigrants came to the American continent they discovered a better material than white radish which is pumpkin. Therefore the jack lanterns they see are usually made of pumpkins.
